Micropropagated Plants
These are daylilies cloned in a laboratory by means of tissue culture, using tiny pieces of the parent plant. Large numbers of plants can thus be produced very quickly. All very well in theory, but we have previously shunned them on the grounds that they are in some way inferior and not identical to the original. Such is the prevailing wisdom.
When a glossy catalogue arrived, however, I weakened and sent off an order. After all, they were offering top of the range plants at ridiculous prices!
I was informed that they were field grown, although I assume they must have been tissue cultured originally.
Our earlier prejudices have been partly disproved in that the plants are in no way inferior. Whether they are true to the original is a bit problematic. Most appear to be, others not quite. Photos in books and catalogues are not infallible, as they are usually taken in the USA and some flowers look quite different here.
Like it or not the market is being flooded with them, so the absolute bargain at your local Garden Center or Supermarket is almost certainly tissue cultured.

Bela Lugosi
Deep, burgundy purple with a greenish throat. Top of the class.
Height: 33"(84cm). Flower: 6"(15cm)
Price: £4
Creative Edge
Lavender mauve with a purple eye and a double edge; purple and then gold. Hot weather is needed to bring out the second edge.
Height: 23"(58cm). Flower: 6"(15cm)
Price: £4
Custard Candy
Absolutely identical to the one in my garden. Round cream yellow with a circular maroon eyezone. A super daylily. Stout Medal 1999.
Height: 24"(61cm). Flower: 4.25"(11cm)
Price: £3.50
David Kirchhoff
Ruffled, rich purple with a prominent gold edge.
Height: 26"(66cm). Flower: 5.5"(14cm)
Price: £4
Dream Legacy
This is a nice cream white with a wine red eyezone. A fine looking flower but lacking the picotee edge that it is supposed to have. However, some cultivars need a warmer climate to show their true colours and this could be one of them.
Height: 26"(66cm). Flower: 4.5"(11cm)
Price: £3.50
El Desperado
Mustard yellow with wine-purple eye and partial edge. This highly acclaimed daylily has won awards in both the U.S.A. and Europe.
Height: 28"(71cm). Flower: 4.25"(11cm)
Price: £3.50
Elegant Candy
A small flower with a big reputation. Pink with a narrow red triangular eyezone and green throat. My "original" seemed to have a bit more class but there's not much in it and this one seems to improve every year. Now we can't tell the difference!
Height: 25"(64"). Flower: 4.25"(11cm)
Price: £3.50
Space Coast Starburst
Lavender pink with a large yellow throat and a stunning gold edge.
Height: 25"(63cm). Flower: 6"(15cm)
Price: £4
Strawberry Fields Forever
Soft pink with a strawberry rose eyezone and green throat. The extravagant matching edging (seen in American photos) is barely apparent in our climate, as is often the case with Florida bred daylilies. Still, a very pretty flower.
Height: 26"(66cm). Flower: 4.5"(11cm)
Price: £3.50
Wineberry Candy
Another one of the very popular "Candy" series. Lavender pink with a purple eye and green throat.
Height: 22"(56cm). Flower: 4.75"(12cm)
Price: £3.50
